Repair or replace?
The $5,000 rule, what R-22 and R-410A mean for you, and when a repair still makes sense.
When is a replacement worth pricing?
The compressor has failed
A compressor is the most expensive part of an air conditioner. On an older system, its repair price is usually the moment to compare it with a new system.
Repeat breakdowns
When the same system needs a repair every summer, add up the last two years of bills before paying for the next one. The $5,000 rule of thumb multiplies the system’s age by the repair price; over 5,000, price a replacement.
An R-22 system
Older systems may use R-22, which hasn’t been produced or imported in the US since 2020. You can keep servicing an R-22 system, but its refrigerant is limited, so a big leak is a reason to price a replacement.
It can’t keep up in July
A system that runs nonstop and still loses ground on the hottest afternoons may be undersized, leaking or worn out. The technician tells you which.
Not sure it needs replacing?
Start with an $89 diagnostic visit. If a repair is possible and you go ahead, the $89 is credited toward it.
How does a replacement work?
Look at the current system
The technician looks at the equipment you have now and where the new unit will go.
The price
You get the price for the replacement before any work starts, and you decide.
Install
The old equipment comes out and the new system goes in.
What’s different about replacing an AC in Las Vegas
Las Vegas averages about nine days a year at or above 110°F, so a replacement system has to be sized for the hottest afternoons, not the average ones.
The refrigerant your system uses shapes the decision. Older R-22 systems can still be serviced, but R-22 hasn’t been produced or imported in the US since 2020.
The EPA says existing R-410A systems can be used and repaired for their whole life, including with a similar R-410A condensing unit or indoor coil.
Replacing both together counts as a new system, which generally must use a lower-impact refrigerant. A May 2026 EPA rule lets equipment built before 2025 still be installed until that stock runs out.
Permits differ by address. Inside Las Vegas city limits, the City requires a mechanical permit to install or change any part of a heating or cooling system, apart from minor parts.
Clark County, which covers Spring Valley, Paradise, Enterprise and Summerlin South, sells online permits for AC and furnace replacements, one appliance per permit.
AMA Care Plan members pay no diagnostic fee and get 10% off repairs (not new equipment). See the plan

Questions
Should I repair or replace my AC?
Repair usually makes sense for a newer system with a single failed part.
Price a replacement when the compressor fails on an older system, when it uses R-22, or when it breaks down every summer.
