How a home warranty AC or water heater claim works

A Las Vegas home warranty claim runs through your warranty company: they assign a contractor and decide what’s covered. If yours assigned AMA Air, call (702) 750-2608 with your work-order number.

What is a home warranty, legally?

In Nevada, a home warranty is a service contract, not insurance. The Nevada Division of Insurance licenses and regulates service contract providers under NRS 690C, and it keeps an online lookup of licensed providers.

That matters because your rights come from the contract you signed. The contract, not the contractor, decides what’s covered and what you pay.

What happens after I file a claim?

Your warranty company assigns a contractor and sends them a work order. The contractor contacts you to schedule, diagnoses the problem and reports back to the warranty company.

Bigger repairs, such as a compressor, a coil or a water heater, wait while the warranty company reviews the report and authorizes the work.

That review comes before any parts are ordered, and it’s often where the waiting happens.

Who sets the service fee?

Your contract does. Some warranty companies have the contractor collect it at the visit; others charge you directly. Either way, the amount comes from your contract, so check it before the visit.

What is often not covered?

Contracts commonly exclude known pre-existing conditions and the haul-away of old equipment, and many cap what they’ll pay to fix one item.

Problems caused by skipped maintenance may not be covered either. Read the exclusions section of your contract before you file.

When part of a job isn’t covered, the contractor should tell you what it is and what it costs before doing it. You can decide to pay for it, skip it, or ask your warranty company about it.

Can maintenance affect my claim?

It can. Nevada’s Division of Insurance warns that a service contract claim may be denied if you can’t show required maintenance, such as annual HVAC servicing.

Keep the receipt from every tune-up and water heater service, whoever does the work. If your contract lists maintenance requirements, follow them on schedule.

How do I keep a claim moving?

Answer the contractor’s call or text to set the appointment. Have the area around the equipment clear. Give the work-order number when you call.

If your claim needs authorization, ask the warranty company for the status; the contractor can’t approve it for them.

When should I call?

If your warranty company assigned AMA Air, call (702) 750-2608 with your work-order number.

If you’d rather hire us directly, a repair visit starts with the $89 diagnostic, credited toward the repair.
